Road Name Stories

Road of King Sejong the Great

Sejong-daero is a major boulevard stretching from Gwanghwamun to Seoul Station. It was formed in 2010 by merging 'Sejong-ro' and 'Taepyeong-ro'.

During the Joseon Dynasty, this street was known as **'Yukjo-geori'** (Street of Six Ministries), lined with key government offices including the State Council and the Six Ministries. The name honors **King Sejong the Great**, the fourth monarch of Joseon, celebrated for creating Hangeul and advancing science and culture.

Today, home to Gyeongbokgung Palace, Gwanghwamun Square, and major government complexes, Sejong-daero remains the symbolic heart of South Korea's politics and history.
